Wisconsin Grad Student Divorces his Car

WiscDivorce Wisconsin Grad Student Divorces his Car
David Zaks has grown dissatisfied with his relationship with his car. Zaks is a graduate student in Madison, Wisconsin – a city that offers some of the nation’s best cycling access to roads and trails, good public transit, and a car-sharing service.

Since moving to Madison 3-and-a-half years ago, it became apparent that things were changing between Zaks and his car. The car spends most of its time alone: the two have less in common, and have apparently grown apart.

Zaks has announced his impending divorce on his website and is looking for donations to help send his newly-single vehicle off to a better and more productive life. After sprucing the car up, he plans to drive it to New Orleans where it will serve the Lower 9th Ward and help with post-Katrina rebuilding efforts. He also plans to offset the greenhouse gas emissions of both his drive to the Big Easy as well as all of the car’s many miles to come – not a bad alimony settlement for the car, if you ask me.

That is a nice looking trike that Mr. Garcia made. Very clean.

Montague’s folding tech is nice, but I’ve heard mixed reviews about the rest of the bike — at least according to the internets, some of their bikes need several less-than-stellar components upgraded or replaced very quickly if ridden more than casually (at least, in the cheaper lines).

After researching it I’ve grown far more partial to Xootr’s Swift, for balancing folded portability, light weight and standard components (a biggie for me). There’s a monster thread at bikeforums on it: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=83711

Brompton, Bike Friday, Airnimal, Dahon and Downtube are the other big names I see commonly. It would be nice for these things to really catch on — I feel like more people would use bikes if they were lighter and more easily stored/grabbed.
