Recycling’s ok as a back-up option, but reusing kicks its butt on the green-o-meter. We’re also big fans of taking something that’s environmental, like riding a bike, and decreasing the net impact even more. Blue Collar Mountain Biking has done just that by taking worn-out parts and refashioning them into a super-cool bottle opener.
All you need is a short length of spent chain, a used-up cassette, a chain tool, some degreaser, and either a hack-saw or angle grinder. If you don’t have the raw materials, a bike shop will be only too happy to part with some of these oft-replaced (and disposed of) components.
Check out the full step-by-step instructions and put some old metal to a good use. These would make a great do-it-yourself gift too – I know I’d be psyched to get one.
