Need to add spice to your commute? Improv Everywhere may have just what you need. January 12th marked the seventh edition of No Pants, an event that has spread to 8 cities worldwide. 2,000 people took pantless commutes, including 900 in New York City.

The event largely spread via word of mouth and through the group's Facebook site (login required). For 2008, No Pants cities included Adelaide, Australia; Boston; Chicago; Washington DC; Portland, OR; and Toronto, Canada.

The premise is simple. Dress as you normally would for your commute – minus the bottom portion. Strip down to your skivvies, head to your subway station, and keep a straight face. One rider described the outfit as "all business on top and party on the bottom."

If questioned, Improv Everywhere asks participants to casually quip that they must have forgotten their pants and that, yes, it is a little cold. All these other pantless riders? Must be a coincidence.

There's not really any point or grandiose message that the group hopes to make. It's about having goofy fun and using the mass transit world as a stage for baring their briefs.

Today Show video coverage, after the jump.

Video clip for the Today Show:

The requirements for participation are straightforward. From Improv Everywhere:
1) Willing to take pants off on subway
2) Able to keep a straight face about it
**THIS IS A PARTICIPATORY EVENT. DO NOT SHOW UP UNLESS YOU PLAN TO TAKE YOUR PANTS OFF. THIS INCLUDES NEWS MEDIA**

In 2006, New York police arrested 8 pantless subway riders. Since that time, the news coverage of the event and participation has increased dramatically.

From No Pants NYC:
As my group boarded our assigned car and sat calmly waiting for the train to move, I realized that I didn’t know a single person in the group. We were all strangers to each other. In many ways, we were just like a normal train car, a bunch of strangers quietly sitting and ignoring each other. The key difference was that we all knew that we would soon be seeing each other pantless.

Should You Get a Carectomy?

Cars are the most inconvenient convenience we have. We're required to have them, but increasingly, we dislike them. At Carectomy, we're trying to figure out how to extract cars from people.

The operation is a little bit painful, but life afterward is much more awesome. If you're interested in carectomies, sign up to our newsletter, or subscribe our RSS feed below.
