If questioned, Improv Everywhere asks participants to casually quip that they must have forgotten their pants and that, yes, it is a little cold. All these other pantless riders? Must be a coincidence. There's not really any point or grandiose message that the group hopes to make. It's about having goofy fun and using the mass transit world as a stage for baring their briefs. Video clip for the Today Show: The requirements for participation are straightforward. From Improv Everywhere:
1) Willing to take pants off on subway
![]() In 2006, New York police arrested 8 pantless subway riders. Since that time, the news coverage of the event and participation has increased dramatically. From No Pants NYC:
As my group boarded our assigned car and sat calmly waiting for the train to move, I realized that I didn’t know a single person in the group. We were all strangers to each other. In many ways, we were just like a normal train car, a bunch of strangers quietly sitting and ignoring each other. The key difference was that we all knew that we would soon be seeing each other pantless. Photos via flickr by sgoralnick.

Cars are the most inconvenient convenience we have. We're required to have them, but increasingly, we dislike them. At Carectomy, we're trying to figure out how to extract cars from people.
The operation is a little bit painful, but life afterward is much more awesome. If you're interested in carectomies, sign up to our newsletter, or subscribe our RSS feed below.
