While my title may be over the top, the salient point is that if you can move an entire household's worth of furniture by bicycle, you can certainly conduct your daily doings without a car. Here's another phenomenal video by StreetFilms to illustrate the point, a bike move in Portland, OR: While moving furniture by bike may seem a daunting task, there's plenty of help available. Cycling-network sites like SHIFT have online calendars where those in need of help can post move dates. SHIFT reports dozens of voulnteers with bikes and trailers regularly chipping in to help move their fellow bikers. The moves are quick, smog-free, and tend to turn into rocking-good-time parties. Compare that to your typical move days. Be prepared to supply donuts, coffee, beer, pizza, etc... and to return the favor. Cars are the most inconvenient convenience we have. We're required to have them, but increasingly, we dislike them. At Carectomy, we're trying to figure out how to extract cars from people.
The operation is a little bit painful, but life afterward is much more awesome. If you're interested in carectomies, sign up to our newsletter, or subscribe our RSS feed below.
