GURU Green Guru Brings Cool Use to Refuse

Want to look hip while commuting? Well, Green Guru Gear has you covered. The environmentally-obsessed company works with used-up inner tubes (both from bikes and trucks), reclaimed billboard vinyl, rugged hemp (causes little erosion, no pesticides necessary, very renewable/sustainable crop), and recycled P.E.T. from soda and water bottles.

Ecologic Designs Green Gear is an innovative eco-conscious line of bags and soft goods developed for people who want tough, dependable, functional gear, yet do not want it at the expense of the environment. Dedicated to the design and manufacture of gear and products from recycled or environmentally friendly materials, Ecologic Designs is able to help the earth while providing its user with incredibly durable, dependable and stylish products. Ecologic Designs is dedicated to products and fashions that have a positive environmental and social impact, while raising ecological awareness.

I love the green approach this Colorado company takes. Environmentalism is not an afterthought or an option: it’s central to their business model. Particularly appealing to cyclists like me, Green Guru will take defunct bike inner tubes, clean them up, and stitch them into cool gear. Bike shops can do this in volume by supplying the raw material of flat tubes, have their own logos affixed to products, and resell what otherwise was trash to their customers (kind of reminds me of Fight Club where lipo-sucked fat is made into soap and resold to the bloated richies).

The ultra-trendy messenger bag design has trickled into all walks of life, and has even made its way into corporate settings with laptop-crossovers. Green Guru’s line runs from big, burly messenger-specific models to smaller, office-appropriate bags. Of course these are great for cycling, but also good choices for the mass transit or walking-commuter carectomy patients out there. Customers can select their preferred material and size and away you go to green-hipster status.

Green Guru’s lineup also includes wallets and pouches made from innertubes. For those with a less traditional commute path, they make surfboard and snowboard bags from reclaimed billboards, and a chalk bag for rock climbers that combines all of their materials: spent climbing ropes, recycled inner tubes, hemp, and recycled P.E.T fashioned into a fleece interior.
