Thanks for your input, but I was speaking generally about the ride provided by the average bicycle and not from a materials perspective.

"Actually, aluminum is stiffer than steel, which is probably why you prefer steel frames."

E aluminium = 70 GPa
E steel = 200 GPa

Steel is about 2.857 times stiffer than al aly.

All what you have written about the material is wrong. Steel is less compliant, more stiff for the same thickness as Al. check your things...

Thank you, Larvo. I was thinking the same thing about aluminum vs. steel. Aluminum transmits vibration way more than steel does for various reasons.

I am glad to see the gov promoting healthier activities for kids, but they are not going to work unless the parents are on board, as you said. What is ridiculous is that the parents are the ones who allow this to happen... I get so sad whenever I see overweight children. It is bad enough that so many of us adults are overweight, yes I am overweight, probably even considered obese on a doctor scale; but my children are not. But it is just downright irresponsible to not try to keep our children healthy. Why give them such a bad start in life? All it takes is some motivation, effort, discipline, and seeking of knowledge to be healthier. Is that too much to give to our children?

The about.com article is wrong. Snell's rants about the death of the streetcar were dismissed at the time he testified before congress. POV was foolish for not investigating his claims. Basically streetcars died out because they were expensive to build, inflexible with respect to routing and ultimately were less cost effective than buses not to mention that by the 1950s far more people preferred to just drive their cars. As a transportation system they simply had been passed up by newer methods. I would suggest people read some of the links located on this page:

I would absolutely love to see every town in Britain look something like this and be very neary self-sustainable, meaning that Britain was very nearly self-sustainable. But the fact is - It will be 2025 before the government even produces plans for a few trial eco towns, then a further 8 years before they agree on it and 10 years to implement them and by the time they're finished they would have spent triple the budget!
I'm not a glass half empty guy but lets face it theres only a few ways this is going to go:
1. Iran becomes the first nuclear suicide bomber.

2. Climate change changes the map of the world.

3. China takes over the world.

I think just as there were no good english football managers up to the England manager task and they got a swede, we should get a german or a norwegian to be priminister. Or, seeing as even our nuclear power stations are now owned by the french, we should call Britain GBPlc. and sell the whole stinking thing to germany or norway etc and hope they can sort it out!

The future is here! The "Ugly Americans" who oppose it with vigorous rejection are the same who's pockets are now filled with worthless greenbacks, deflated to pay off Wall Street Bankster's crimes and their Golden Parachutes for retirement in the Cayman Island paradises of the world! We are finally rid of the slime! Now for a Solar life away from the Oil Barons and their bribes, and onward into the deserts of Mexico and South Western U.S.A. to build Solar Power installations and a new desert civilization, lots of power, no pollution, few germs, Underground shelters for aquaponics and pest free gardens, and buses, Solar powered and clean! Live in filthy New York City if you must! I see a new frontier on the horizon, financed by the power they harvest, by cleaning their mirrors nightly in the desert cool! Living daily under the protection of the same mirrors, and desert sands, safe and invisible, a crime free world unto itself! Humanity is only beginning to populate the earth, and the "American Dream" paradigm is dying and slowly riding into the sunset, on a two cylinder radial engined throw-back to another glory time, the Harley Davidson, rider complete with Stetson hat, Barbi-Doll surgically enhanced with plastic, Military badges pinned on chest and all ! Rejoice the "Fourth Turning" of America, the birth of age of the "Intellectual American", the end of militarism, warring, and the birth of the true "Age of Aquarius " for the Americas, a time of music, science and sustainable development, a time of controlled, not rampant, breeding, a time of DNA and Stem-cell research, the beginning of the greatest era ever for mankind, sanity at the helm, the old schools closed forever, and corporatism dead and buried by rational laws! May The greater deities bless the people of the Western world and the whole world with common sense and decency towards one another, sustainable in synchonicity with nature, not opposed as before, and aided by her many mysteries not crippled by her forces as once was! Solar buses, the first few sprouts of a new reality for mankind! Spawned in such sorrow, showing promise for all! Bravo Australia! A use for your Sun!

I think what it is that you are missing when you say " I still don't get it" is that, you do not own the road. In this go fast world of cell phones and giant gas guzzler SUVs more and more it seems that people drive as if they are the only ones that have somewhere to be. They hate motorcyclist as well as bicycles and pedestrians because of no other reason than the belief that their journey is more important, and everyone else should get out of their way. I'm ok that you don't get it. All I ask is that you try not to run me down while you blast along, talking on your cell phone in your giant pollution spewing iron box.

Small correction:
"Aluminum frames aren’t as stiff as steel"
Actually, aluminum is stiffer than steel, which is probably why you prefer steel frames. While stiffness can be an attribute it punishes the rider when ridden on any surface less than perfectly smooth. Steel provides a much more compliant ride as the frame flexes to absorb much of the road shock. But, please, don't get wrapped up in the details, get a bike and get out there and ride. Safety is of greatest importance, learn and observe the rules of the road. Always wear a helmet. Get a bike maintenance book from your library and learn to maintain your bike and spot potential problems before they make your bike unsafe. Don't ride after dark or in inclement weather without lights, front and rear. Be respectful and pleasant with all motorists (many won't be to you) keeping in mind that they are commanding a lethal weapon. Try to ride with other cyclists, there's strength in numbers and you'll be much more easily seen. Wear bright or light colored clothing. Smile (you won't have to try hard, chances are if you haven't ridden in a while you'll be grinning from ear to ear)
Beat wishes,

The data is very interesting, and I'd like to know similar information for where I live (Ecuador). I lived in Japan for 3 years and over there I felt so safe riding my bike everyday for most of my daily chores. I rode my bike while pregnant and then with my baby on my back, and I felt very safe.
Back in Quito I wouldn't dare to ride a bike on the streets with my toddler on it. It also depends on the neighborhood, but my general impression is that it could be very dangerous for a mom with a child.
We're car free and use public transportation a lot, though.

We Americans are running out of folks to kill for oil! The Canadians are supposed to have at least 2 equivalents of Saudi Arabia in their tar sands and welcome us to take it in exchange for a few jobs! Catch is: It costs a fortune to recover! Needs a Nuclear reactor on site to make heat to melt the damn stuff and wash the sand out of it! Without oil America does not exist! We are oil! Jet planes, cars, ships, military forces, - all need oil! Bicycle paths are cute concessions by the powerful majority - lip service to the fools among us! Small plastic bodied two seater tandem electric cars are next! but will only last a short while, until we fine another place to extract sweet crude in the world and drive Corvettes with 600 hp engines and Cadillacs with the new 700 hp engines again! Afghanistan, traversed in conquest by our soldiers, leads to the Turkmenistan and Chinese-claimed oil fields but don't let that fact deter you, for as I have come to realize - no sweet crude - no Yankee Doodle! The 21st Century is already a setup for the American Quest for sweet crude in the world! Easiest fields first, Canada's oil only when we have to.(Messy stuff, dammit!)
