Arlington, Virginia is hosting a Car-Free Diet Expo today, January 29th. The event, located 2 blocks from a Metro Station, has a session that caters to the property-management and business community and another presentation for employees and residents. The mission is to get people to go car-free or to take a Car-Diet.
Although the event is geared towards the Arlington, VA / D.C. Metro area, many of the tips towards decreasing car-usage are universal. Topics include: carsharing, transit benefits, telecommunting, and bike and walk programs.
Chris Balish will provide the star-power to the event. In addition to hosting the entertainment/trend TV show The CW Now, he’s the author of How To Live Well Without Owning A Car. Balish’s book comes from the angle of improving personal finances and analyzes the true costs of car ownership. He offers practical tips to decrease car usage – from carpooling to car-free dating.
A You Tube clip of Chris Balish:
Arlington has set an impressive precedent. The Arlington County Commuter Services offers information on walking, biking, mass transit options, and transportation information specifically for kids. The overarching theme is sustainable transportation with a reduction in car traffic, cleaner air, and a friendlier, happier community. The Car-Free Diet calculator shows users the amount of money they can save, calories they can burn, and CO2 emissions they can reduce by choosing alternatives to driving.
The Car-Free Expo brings these initiative together with area businesses to provide employers and the public knowledge, incentives, and swag!
